5 for Friday | The Week's Best Blogs (2/15/08 Edition)

February 15th, 2008 in Friday Blog Clips

by: Matthew Griffin

Surveys seem to be the big theme this week. Freelance Switch posted the results of their freelancer survey with some surprising results, and Rimm Kaufman gave a rundown of Google's new survey building tool. Also, 5 for Friday just wouldn't be right without Vandelay Website Design on the list, so Steven Snell returns with Common Reasons a Website is Unsuccessful.

3700 Frelancers Surveyed... The Results are Here! - Freelance Switch
Special thanks to Brad Colbow Design for turning me onto this article. The results of the survey are sure to make you really happy or really sad.

Google Docs Survey Tool - Rimm Kaufman
Google continues to improve its set of Office-like applications. Its latest offering is a survey tool that integrates with the spreadsheet app. Rimm Kaufman gives a great overview here.

Common Reasons a Website is Unsuccessful - Vandelay Website Design
This would be a good article to print and hand out to clients who are complaining about the success of their website. Vandelay is dead-on.

Award Winning Newspaper Designs - Smashing Magazine
The printed newspaper is slowly dying, so take a gander at the best of the old-world medium while you can. This article from Smashing Magazine is inspiring no matter what your area of design focus happens to be.

Track Your Crawl Rate with SEO Meter - Super Blogging Tips
This article a great analysis of SEO Meter. Tay over at Super Blogging Tips consistently produces excellent content. But since most of it is specifically about blogging, I don't have many opportunities to link up. This post will be beneficial to bloggers and designers alike.

One thing I dislike about newspapers is that they ask me to "turn to page X" to continue reading. Oh...that is so annoying... this is the same reason I don't find the "read more" button too appealing either. I understand some use the "read more" to save bandwidth on a welcome page but I hate it via RSS.

No problem, Steven.

Yeah, ditto on the link back Matt. Thanks for the great blog clips too, I especially liked the newspaper designs. I've always been interested in newspaper design because it seems so confining. When it's done well it's pretty cool.
