Wesley C. Griffin

I decided to round out the Mirificam Press interview series with something a little different. Wesley C. Griffin is an accomplished architect working in the Austin, Texas area and he also happens to be my father. I think you'll find his insight as a designer in an ancient vocation and as a mature Christian to be unique and refined.

You can see some of the projects Wes has worked on in the past at GriffinJacobson.com. I consider it a great honor to feature my father here and I want to thank him for taking the time not only to answers these questions but countless other questions throughout my life. I may a little biased but, great answers.

If you could sum up your philosophy of life in just a few sentences, what would you say?

I am a follower of Jesus the Christ as revealed in Holy Scripture, and endeavor to live my life based on His teachings.

Why have you chosen design as your life work?

I discovered that I was gifted in design, and have been blessed to use this ability in my vocation.

What is the purpose of design?

Design is another name for creation, and is our most basic connection to the Image of God in us. Design is creative problem solving, and its purpose is to bring glory to God.

Do you think your philosophy about life informs your understanding of the purpose of design?

Yes

If so how?

Stated above

Do you think that design can communicate truth? Is it even important that design communicate truth?

Yes, all creation communicates the truth of its Creator. Likewise, as those made in His image, our designs can and should communicate truth.

What is truth?

Truth is embodied in the person and teachings of Jesus the Christ.

Can design right the wrongs of this world? If so, to what extent?

To the extent that design is God’s act of creation, it is the only thing that can right the wrongs of this world. To the extent that my designs spring forth from a relationship with the living Creator, my designs will participate in His plan to align our world with His, “on earth, as it is in heaven”.
