http://www.protagonize.com/ is my favorite. This is exactly the look I'd like to have in our site - especially the "hot stories" section. Perhaps next year or so, i'll work on it. One of the issues I've had with a "hot stories" section is the content that goes there... it is truly time consuming to find it, edit it, and publish it.

The first design caught my eye right off the bat. It looked simple, yet intruguing. The rest may look simple, but doesnt have as much allure as the first.
