  • I've been thinking a lot this week about how we have all these different definitions of design in our culture. It's interesting that we can make a living as designers and be so confused about what design is. This will be the topic in the first part of the Mirificam Press video series to be released in the next month or so. For now, here are this week's 5 for Friday.

  • There were some great programming articles posted this week. I highly recommend bookmarking the PHP code snippet article as I've found myself at one time or another, using just about every function on the list. The lazy load article by David Walsh is another really interesting concept. It seems like a great solution for high traffic sites. Now, here's this week's 5 for Friday.

  • If you check out only one link on 5 for Friday this week, check out the 20 tools for freelancers article. You're probably familiar with a lot of the tools on the list, but I think you'll find a bunch of new and exciting ones as well. Production continues on the Mirificam Press video series. Right now I'm shooting video and editing title screens and graphics. Shouldn't be too much longer before it's ready to go. Now, here's this week's 5 for Friday.

  • When we think of world changers through history, our minds instinctively turn to primary causes. Stories of Hitlers, Alexanders, and Napoleans intrigue us and shape our understanding of why things are the way they are. In most cases, though, it's secondary causes that are most necessary to the outcome of history. Philosophers, inventors, writers, and martyrs; these are the figures, without which our world would would be a very different place. These silent shapers converge and collide, many times unwittingly, to channel and shape the events and leaders of the future. I realize that pegging "web worker" as the most important job of the 21st century is quite a claim, but many signs point to the web worker as the secondary cause of the next generation's cultural atmosphere. Not only that, the web worker may be the most unexpected and unacknowledged secondary cause of change the world has ever known.

  • There were some really great articles to choose from this week on 5 for Friday. I'm especially enjoying seeing all the cool new stuff that's being done with jQuery right now. It seems like jQuery is growing into a viable Flash alternative that can also be standards compliant. Very cool. And now this week's 5 for Friday.
