Getting Stuff Printed Online: 4 Resources I've Actually Used

As much as we hate to admit it, web designers still have to get stuff printed from time to time. We can't do without our business cards and bumper stickers, our t-shirts and table tents. But when we're forced to go groveling to the printing industry, we can at least make sure we use an automated online printer. That's still stickin' it to the man a little bit, right? I've used a handful of these online printers over the past few years and I think my experiences could be a great benefit to a web designer looking for a place to print. So here they are—four online printing resources I've actually used.
The best way to describe PrintPlace is cheap and reliable. I've ordered several sets of business cards, postcards, and brochures from them and every order has met or exceeded my expectations. They have a wide range of products and a quick quote system that's very handy. PrintPlace typically takes a little longer to fulfill orders than their competitor 48hourprint.com but they do offer expedited printing and shipping for an additional charge. Also, they don't support as many file formats as 48hourprint and their ordering system can be a little frustrating at times. Other than that, they're golden.
When you want printing done quickly and you're willing to pay a little more, 48hourprint is the way to go. Keep in mind that when I say "pay a little more" I only mean relative to PrintPlace.com. 48hourprint's prices are awesome compared to most local printers you'll run into. Their quote and ordering system is smooth and they support most major image formats. Also, their turnaround time is incredible. Artwork literally goes to press within 48 hours of proof approval. I usually see a final product at my doorstep in a little less than a week. It's truly amazing. As I mentioned, though, their prices are a little higher than PrintPlace and their product selection isn't quite as illustrative. But overall, 48hourprint is awesome.
I have to start this review by giving Cafepress credit for being a pioneer and an innovator in the area of personal online t-shirt design. They were doing it when it wasn't cool. Unfortunately, I've never been really happy with their printing. White t-shirts look okay but the dark t-shirts are low quality. They don't look that good when you first get them, and after one wash—forget about it. Their other product—stickers, mugs, mousepads, etc.—are pretty good but not great. The biggest plus for Cafepress is their personal shop system. You can build your own t-shirt shop really fast and apply your own custom template to it. But without quality merchandise to back it up, I'm going to have to recommend that you steer clear of Cafepress.
Zazzle has been around almost as long as Cafepress, but for some reason, I didn't get around to using them until recently. I ordered a couple of black t-shirts imprinted with some pretty detailed artwork. I was impressed by their interactive t-shirt design program but I was a little skeptical about the quality of the product after my less-than-satisfying experiences with Cafepress. When the package came, I was stunned. The shirts looked like they were produced by a real screen-printer. The ink was thick and bright and the colors were flawless. After I washed the shirts a few times, they still looked brand new (am I gushing?). Needless to say, if you want quality t-shirt printing, go to Zazzle. I just wish they had a t-shirt shop program more like Cafepress.

Personally, I've had great success with www.PrintingForLess.com on many occasions. Their custom service is simply outstanding. That said, I haven't done any price comparison in a while and I don't know how their prices match up with PrintPlace/48HourPrint.

Thanks for the link, James.

The only problem with online print places is the location. Over In Perth Oz, the best I would recommend is HeroPrint.

I have used overnightprints.com many times for business cards and a few times for gift cards they do a pretty great job, though their order/account system could be a little friendlier. Gift cards were great if you need enough to get offset vs. digital.

Thanks to everyone for the links and recommendations.

I always use www.hotcards.com. They're ridiculously cheap, easy to upload to, and its not hard to talk to someone if you need to.

I use Overnight Prints for business cards as well. Cafe Press has nice quality posters. I never really had a problem with the quality of the shirts, but they do fade.

We ordered magnets from PrintPlace.com. The samples held four pieces of paper so we ordered some. The actual magnets that came would not even hold one piece of paper and slid to the floor. They refused to replace, credit or refund our order and suggested we "Buy more" of their bad products and they would give us 20% off on the second order. Horrible business ethics. We have posted the actual emails that were sent back and forth in our own Blog and we welcome EVERYONE to come, view and leave their own comments about their experience with PrintPlace.com http://seo-blog.newsunseo.com/index.php/2008/03/18/printplacecom-passionate-about-taking-money-not-passionate-about-their-products-or-customer-service/ WE WILL NEVER BE SENDING THEM BUSINESS AGAIN.

I tried overnightprints.com for a few orders (trying to give them the benefit of the doubt) and they just kept messing up ... smeared ink, etc. Now I use VistaPrint.com all the time and have never had a problem. Really cheap too. Especially once you've done a project with them, when you return to their site you'll see all their prices slashed with red and dirt cheap prices in their place. They try to get you with uploading fees and shipping fees, but even then its better than any other prices i've seen!

Thanks for the recommendation, Ashley. I'll have to check vistaprint.com out.

I've got my business cards and stickers printed at lettuceprint.com. The quality was actually pretty good.

I have tried all the places recommended above, also Maracom, graphiX, and many others. Vistaprint made charges on my card in the name of Vacationsforless, not cool..I caught it too late. If you want professional portfolio printing at really great prices a place called http://www.darksunstudio.com has offset high quality printing, everything from posters to business cards (I called them and they are getting more put up in the store as they are new in online printing) . I just liked that it was real offset, with stunning results - nothing cheap looking - and they did a complicated foil and embossed job...and offer me more options for paper (14 stock types). I think it's a mom&pop printshop, but I don't know.

You have to be very careful of all of these online printers. Their prices are not as cheap as everyone thinks. If they are cheap, they probably do gang runs, not custom jobs. Check your local printers for comparison. All it takes is a phone call.

Here is a printing source to consider. http://www.premiumcards.net Though they only print Business Cards and Postcards with a few other similar products. Here also a link to their blog http://premiumcards.blogspot.com/ cheers

Are you aware of alternatives to CafePress and Zazzle that enable users to remove the branding? Even if they have to pay to do so?

I used Viovio to print books. You can make your own pages and build the book. The software on their site is basic and the print quality is NOT very good. One time my book came with pages falling out and the pages all had a strong yellow tint to them!

I have used Overnight prints on many occasions and all the materials came out fine, EXCEPT this very last time, when the colors were all off. I got them to re-print part of the order and it was still the wrong colors. Basically, it has everything to do with the color profiles in Photoshop, which they don't tell you about in their design guide or their common mistakes. You have to change the color profile from its default settings. I am hopping that I can get this issue resolved and that they will re-print my full order in its true colors. Also, I hope that they will put the color profile setting in their design guide so that this doesn't happen to other people.

I was using Overnight Prints for a while, and was simply ordering reprints of a brochure they had originally done for me. Then on our last shipment, the black background was more brown than black. I had a HORRIBLE time with their customer service trying to get a reprint and a refund of messed-up order on my credit card. It went on for weeks, and every time I phoned I got someone else on the phone who couldn't seem to understand or read in my file what had happened previously -- very frustrating. They tried to fix the color, but the replacement was bad also. The tech people there were trying to help, but the customer service on the phones was just awful.

I suggest the place to go to make custom, quality, most cost-efficient, business cards is www.printsmadeeasy.com. They specialize in designing custom postcards, business cards, lables, stationery, brochures, invitations, envelopes, flyers, greeting cards, letterhead, pens, & posters.

I've been using OvernightPrints.com for years, but their service and quality has been declining steadily. The paper stock for business cards is great (nice and thick), and their glossy coating is very nice. But, the printing quality and consistency has been off the last few times I've ordered from them. They claim quick turnaround times, but my last couple of orders arrived much later than their schedule promises. I fought w/ their customer service on the phone and via email, and all I got was rude people telling me that I was incorrect. When I pointed out the times, and showed that THEY were in the wrong, I never heard back. So, I'd say their customer service is BAD! All in all, I ended up receiving my order several days after it should have gotten to me, which just happened to be too late. Turned out to be a waste of money on that order. I've since promised to never use them again, and to let everyone know about my experience. I used Vista Print many years ago, quite a few times, but they completely screwed up an order and refused to reimburse me. That was the last time I had used them. Looking forward to trying some new places as per the recommendations from people's comments (thanks everyone!).

Thanks for the links and observations. Please check out wymprint.com. They are outstanding in quality, service and price. Also, they have very knowledgeable staff who are very helpful in times of need. I am pretty happy with them so far.
