  • Today is the first day of SXSW Interactive and I'm posting this edition of 5 for Friday from Austin, TX--my hometown. I guess the anticipation of SXSWi makes web designers want to write prctical guides, because this week the blogosphere was overflowing with great tutorials. I'm sure you'll find my five picks for the week to be help resources you can bookmark and return to again and again.

  • I usually avoid having two articles from the same source on 5 for Friday, but this week Smashing Magazine forced me to break the rule. SM makes the list twice with a set of breathtaking typographic posters and a look at website navigation. Vandelay Website Design is on the list, of course, and Web Worker Daily is back with a great guide to switching over to Google Apps.

  • There were an unusual number of great web design resource lists posted this week. Vandelay Website Design offered resources for continual web design improvement. Elite by Design posted a list of inspirational wallpapers. And Brad Colbow Design is back with a list of stunning design portfolios. Also, I'd like to welcome Copy Blogger to 5 for Friday.

  • Surveys seem to be the big theme this week. Freelance Switch posted the results of their freelancer survey with some surprising results, and Rimm Kaufman gave a rundown of Google's new survey building tool. Also, 5 for Friday just wouldn't be right without Vandelay Website Design on the list, so Steven Snell returns with Common Reasons a Website is Unsuccessful.

  • There were so many great articles this week, I really had a difficult time choosing. I finally decided that Courtney Tuttle's two articles about flagship blogging had to be thrown together into a two-for-one link. Brad Colbow Design make its debut on the list this week with a witty and insightful article called My Million Dollar Idea. Also, congratulations to Steven Snell (Vandelay Website Design) on the launch of his new blog, Traffikd. I expect to see some great content coming from over there.

  • This week, I ran across a lot of good "big picture" articles. Deep Jive Interests makes its debut this week with an insightful look at what Digg would look like without the Digg elite. Dosh Dosh chimes in with a discussion about historical propaganda techniques and how they apply to modern web marketing. Vandelay Website Design is back again with realistic look at web designer/client relationships. Overall, the articles I sorted through this week were exceptionally well-written and deep-probing. It was difficult to make cuts but here's the final five.

  • A lot is happening in the world of web design and, of course, the blogosphere always manages to capture the essence of change. This week Yahoo! integrated its search with del.icio.us social bookmarking (Web Worker Daily) and we were introduced to We7 as it raised $6 million to further develop it's DRM-free MP3 download site (Read/Write Web). Also, Veerle's Blog is back again with a stunning Photoshop tutorial.

  • From pointers about relieving eye strain (Web Worker Daily) to tips about what should appear above the fold on a blog (Vandelay Website Design), practical advice for the web designer seemed to be the theme in the blogosphere this week. Smashing Magazine also ran a great article on the development of infographics that I'm sure will inspire you to spice up your graphs and charts. TutorialBlog makes it's debut this week as a companion tutorial post to Smashing Magazine's infographics article. Also, I would like to give a special welcome to Veerle's Blog.

  • This week's list features quite a diverse set of articles, ranging from practical code snippets to online social networking trends. I thought Logic+Emotion's post about "infinite touch points" was especially insightful. It raises some interesting questions about the future of company/client communication. Also, Small Farm Design makes it's debut on the 5 for Friday list with a solid guide to usability basics.

  • I'm limiting the 2008 prediction articles this week to one (a humorous bit from Dot Sauce). The daily influx of these articles is waning so I had to throw one more in before they disappear altogether. I have to point to Web Worker Daily for the most interesting article this week. Their "6 Secrets to Running a Virtual Company" is a fascinating look at a company that's pioneering a better way to do business.
